For most of our careers our roles have been clear, take a problem and turn it into working code. AI can now scaffold a screen, wire an API, write the tests, and explain the stack trace (in seconds), which can make us feel uneasy about the future of our careers. However, our roles are still the same - we are still solving the same problems, but the value is shifting up the stack. Our craft is growing, not going away and in this talk, I want to offer a more hopeful and practical view on this shift. Drawing on hands-on experience shipping production software with these tools every day, we'll look at how AI doesn't replace engineers, but how it frees us to do our best work. I'll show where our craft is heading, what stays valuable and human, and some practical approaches to help you continue growing as an engineer in the age of AI.
