Session
Architecting Crossplay at The New York Times: Multiplayer Systems on Android
Crossplay is a brand new two-player word board game from The New York Times Games team, built as a fully native Android application for asynchronous multiplayer play at global scale. Delivering a smooth experience on Android required careful handling of communication, UI rendering, and platform constraints.
We examine a broadcast-based communication model used instead of socket connections to support matchmaking, turn updates, challenges, and in-game chat while limiting background work and battery usage. We then break down how the game board was built using native Android UI with a hybrid View and Jetpack Compose architecture, covering drag-and-drop tile placement, multi-touch zoom, animations, and lifecycle-aware state handling.
The session also covers Android client responsibilities for chat moderation and the use of deterministic gameplay bots built with Directed Acyclic Word Graphs (DAWGs). The talk shares practical Android patterns applicable to other interactive applications.
